Burns & Wilcox Expands Partnership with Detroit Red Wings Justin Abdelkader through Community Giving

Forgotten Harvest Receives $25,000 Donation from Team Burns & Wilcox

Farmington Hills, Mich. (October 29, 2018)Burns & Wilcox, North America’s leading wholesale insurance broker and underwriting manager, announced an expansion of its sports marketing initiative today with a $25,000 donation to Forgotten Harvest, an Oak Park-based nonprofit that works to donate food to those who would not otherwise have access to it.

Justin Abdelkader, Detroit Red Wings alternate captain and brand ambassador for Burns & Wilcox, joined the company to present the donation to Forgotten Harvest at Little Caesars Arena on Saturday, Oct. 27 following the team’s practice. With a shared passion for supporting the community and raising awareness of important food initiatives, the donation is an extension of the company’s partnership with its brand ambassadors.

“Giving back to the community is as central to the Kaufman family heritage as it is to our company culture,” said Alan Jay Kaufman, Chairman, President, CEO, H.W. Kaufman Group, parent company of Burns & Wilcox. “The opportunity to support a local organization like Forgotten Harvest was a great way to extend our sports sponsorship with Justin Abdelkader.”

Forgotten Harvest was formed in 1990 to fight two problems: hunger and waste. Forgotten Harvest “rescued” over 41.5 million pounds of food last year by collecting surplus prepared and perishable food from over 800 locations, including grocery stores, fruit and vegetable markets, restaurants, caterers, dairies, farmers, wholesale food distributors and other Health Department-approved sources. This donated food, which would otherwise go to waste, is delivered free-of-charge to 250+ emergency food providers in the metro Detroit area.

“We are grateful to Burns & Wilcox and Justin Abdelkader for continuing their support of Forgotten Harvest with the $25,000 to help those in need across metro Detroit,” said Kirk Mayes, CEO of Forgotten Harvest. “It means so much to our organization and the thousands of people who will be fed because of this donation.”

This marks the third donation and $100,000 given to the organization from Burns & Wilcox over the past three years. The contributions were made through the company’s partnership with Nationwide Private Client, employee donations, a Kaufman family donation, and company matches.

“Giving back to the community is an important value I share with Team Burns & Wilcox,” said Abdelkader. “I am honored to extend our partnership to the community with their donation to Forgotten Harvest, an organization I am also proud to support.”

Additional Team Burns & Wilcox brand ambassadors include PGA golfers Webb Simpson and Jimmy Walker who share the same values of integrity, hard work, competitiveness and professionalism – a direct reflection of the Burns & Wilcox brand and culture. In addition to their relationship with Abdelkader, Burns & Wilcox has an official partnership with the Detroit Red Wings and the company’s logo is visible at center ice of Little Caesars Arena.
